Martin McDonagh
Krásavica z Leenane/The Beauty of Leen
black comedy
Directed by Bérczes László a.h.
Mag and Maureen. Mother and daughter. An Unpleasant old woman and a 40-year-old spinster. Somewhere in Ireland, totally at the end of the world, in a hole. These two women have been already living in the old poor creaky house for four decades. In inconsolable nihilism. They can switch on the radio (we play your favourite song), television (Latin American soap operas) or they can look from the dirty window: there is mud outside, cows, always raining. Everyone leaves this place. To England, to USA, wherever.
But now there is a young man from London here, Pato. There is a party in the village. And suddenly he is waking up in the bed of Maureen. Who knows, maybe he will bring her with him. To England. To USA. Wherever. The common life of the mother and the daughter full of hate and isolation starts to be in danger. It is necessary to act. The letters which could change the life finish in the fire. The Beauty of Leen is sitting on mother’s chair, looking in front of her to the emptiness. And the radio is roaring. Martin McDough, one of the most famous dramatists, is writing about boring, hopeless lives with frenetic humour. An empty vegetation without any events is saturated with excitement from blood and death from the morbid soap operas. Extreme, crazy tragicomedy.
